Speaking My Truth

“Don’t be concerned about whether people are watching or criticizing you.”- Eleanor Roosevelt

I recently posted a blog about the highs and lows of my career and what I have learned from them. In the post, I wrote about a very negative experience with a past employer and a friend and former coworker asked me if I was sure I should have posted it.

My answer? Absolutely. I shared my truth- my side of a story that a lot of people never got to hear before.  I didn’t name anyone by name, and I didn’t write about anything that wasn’t a fact; if it upsets some people then I’m sorry for that but I have another quote for those people:

“If you wanted me to speak more highly of you, then perhaps you should have treated me better. You don’t get to narrate my story of my experiences with you.”- Katt Williams

The funny this is that there was so much more to the story that I didn’t share, out of respect for those involved. The point of the blog wasn’t to blast anybody; it was for me to share experiences that have helped to shape me and my career. Even though things ended very badly with that former employer, I still learned a lot from my time there- good and bad. Things weren’t always horrible there; in fact, they were pretty wonderful for a while. That’s why it broke me down so badly for things to end the way they did, and why I am a different person today than I was before I left that job.

You can learn something from every experience in life, and every person you meet along the way. Whether good or bad, you can take something valuable away from your time in that experience. I learned a lot from my time at that old employer, and I am choosing to share some of what I learned there. I hope that by sharing my experiences, I can help someone else who may be dealing with something similar or who may needs some words of encouragement. I’m not perfect, and I’m surely no expert; I’m just a woman who’s learned a lot in my short time here on this Earth and want to help others by sharing what I’ve learned. Even if you’re reading this and laughing because you think I’m ridiculous, then I’m helping ’cause I made you smile. 😉

Always speak your truth. Don’t be afraid to share your life’s ups and downs with others, because you never know who needs to hear your story.
